Design of Single Miniaturized Dielectric Resonant Antenna for Millimeter Wave 5G Application

With the evolution of communication generations, there are more and more connected interfaces in the mobile phones, like Bluetooth, UWB, WiFi-6/6e and, 5G FR2 etc., the space available for each interface is limited. How to improve performance in a limited space is an important key, especially for 5G AiP module. In recently research, designers design antenna by using high Dk materials to reduce antenna size and find the ways to increase antenna gain, the Dielectric Resonant Antenna (DRA) is a practical example. For dielectric resonant antenna: when electromagnetic waves penetrate in different material media (i.e. different permittivity), the reflected waves and incident waves are generated. With proper design, the electromagnetic waves can be excited and form the constructive interference by the same phase as well as resonance in the dielectric cavity. The higher the dielectric coefficient, the greater the amount of reflection, the higher the antenna gain, and the smaller the antenna size. In this paper, we successfully design and implement a miniaturized DRA on the substrate structure for millimeter wave 5G application. The antenna architecture consists of two parts: one is 3-layers Embedded Trace Substrate (ETS) and the other is dielectric box which's dimension of 2.7mm x 2.7mm x 0.8mm. The proposed antenna could efficiently reduce the dimension of the antenna by using the molding material as the dielectric box which's Dk/Df is 22/0.006. The miniaturized DRA is finally put on a 4-layer testing board for the convenience of probing measurement. The result shows the maximum gain is about 6.1dBi at 28GHz and with a bandwidth of 1.94GHz for −6dB return loss. It has a good correlation between simulation and measurement for antenna gain pattern, and the antenna is realized successfully in combination of the substrate and high Dk molding material that making it suitable for practical application in millimeter wave 5G.
