By Applying DC & Impulsive Voltage, Electric Tree Activation in XLPE Insulation System is Achieved

The use of DC voltages, impulsive voltage, repeating DC voltage, & impulses voltage following DC prestressing were used to examine the electric tree starting behavior of XLPE wire insulating. XLPE samples with such a pin-plane electrode arrangement serve as the basis for the treeing test specimens. The inserting needle has a 5 mm tips radius, a 30° pinpointing angle, & a 2 mm pin-plane gap. Whenever DC voltages up to 70 kV as well as -60 kV was repeatedly or constantly supplied to the specimens, none trees emerged. An electric tree might be started with and without DC prestressing using impulsive voltage. Greater impulsive voltage, greater DC prestress levels, & short rest periods among DC prestress & impulsive voltage all contributed to a rise in the tree starting ratio. The original tree length as estimated revealed a linear relationship with the shock amplitude but was essentially independently of the rest periods & DC prestress levels. The injecting, buildup, dispersion, capturing, & detrapping of spatial charged in the vicinity of the needles tip account for the results.
