Application of VFD for Power Factor Improvement in LED Loaded Power Distribution Lines

In this research, a novel approach to variable frequency drives (VFD) is presented. The possibility of using VFD to provide or draw out reactive power from the power distribution lines improving the power factor and, simultaneously, performing VFD primary function of motor powering and speed regulation has been explored. The need for such application arose due to the increasingly widespread use of light emitting diode (LED) lighting devices. In this study, the possibility of using three types of VFD for LED produced reactive power compensation and power factor improvement is investigated. The compensation capabilities and compensation ranges of all three types of VFDs were compared. The research was carried out using mathematical calculation, simulation in Matlab - Simulink and experimentally. A practical application of these compensation measures is proposed.
