PMU-Based Estimation of Inertia Variation: Proposed Metric and Feasibility Analysis

Due to the ever-increasing penetration of renewable energy sources, the estimation of network inertia is becoming a critical task for system operators. This operation is typically carried out by aggregating synchronized measurements acquired at different nodes. In this paper, instead, we investigate the feasibility of a local approach for inertia estimation. In this sense, PMU-based measurements of ROCOF and phasors are exploited to define a new indicator of inertia variations. A preliminary validation in realistic simulated scenarios confirms the proposed approach's potential.
