Multistatic Radar Applications in Combination With Two Target Simulators

Radars with multiple receive nodes that are not collocated to the transmitting node (i.e., multistatic radars) need to be precisely aligned and range calibrated such that a single target results in overlapping detections generated in the individual receive nodes. A geometrical overlap is the prerequisite of successful track fusion algorithms, which are being shown for simulated targets that originate from two target generators as well as real targets that stem from drones and vehicles. It has been found that geometrical calibration with two non-collocated target simulators provides the necessary accuracy for both range and direction calibration. The application range provided with two target simulators is further exploited by using the instruments for simulating wind turbines. The impact of wind turbines on radar measurements is already well known. The documented experiment shows how target simulators can be used to simulate radar cross section (RCS)-Doppler signatures that mimic those of multiple wind turbines to better assess their impact on mono- and multistatic radar measurements.
