A Numerical Study of the Dynamic Behavior of Droplets on Randomly Regular and Randomly Rough Surfaces

Studying the effect of rough microstructures on the dynamic behaviours of droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces can contribute to clean energy utilization and carbon reduction technologies. This simulation compares the dynamic behaviours of droplets on random regular surfaces and random rough surfaces. The rough microstructure of both surfaces was controlled by skewness (−0.3 to 0.3), kurtosis (3.0) and standard deviation (0.3 to 1.1). The maximum spreading length of droplets on both surfaces was selected for comparison. The results show. Gaussian random rough surfaces with a kurtosis of 0.3 and standard deviation of 0.7 to 0.9 are more suitable for droplet bouncing. The conclusions drawn in this work may be useful for preparing anti-icing coatings for power generation equipment such as wind turbine blades.
