Truncated Rectangular Radiator with Meander and Dumbbell Slot on Partial Ground

A wideband FR4 epoxy monopole truncating patch antenna was built for a 5G wireless communication application. The proposed antenna truncating patch excited through a mi-crostrip taper feed line on top of the substrate and a meander slot, a dumbbell-shaped Defected Ground Structure (DGS)slot on the partial ground plane. The meander slot at the bottom of the proposed antenna is implemented to add a lower 5G millimeter wave frequency range suitable for ITU communication applications. The introduction of dumbbell-shaped DGS also improved the antenna bandwidth performance. The proposed antenna gives 5.56dBi peak gain operated at 28GHz. The simulated fractional bandwidth is at 18.67 % for a -10dB reflection coefficient which covers the bandwidth requirements of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT)- Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has approved spectrum frequencies (24.25-29.50GHz) for Information Management Technology (IMT)/5G (fifth generation). The proposed antenna has a straightforward planar structure and occupies a small area of 20mm x 20mm x 1.6mm.
