Meteorological Monitoring System for Transmission Line Tower Based on Power-Over-Fiber

In this study, we proposed a meteorological monito ring system for transmission line tower based on Power-Over-Fib er (POF) technique. The system has the characteristics of long tra nsmission distance, low cost, strong anti-electromagnetic interfer ence ability and less power consumption. In the proposed system, an indium arsenic gallium is used as the photoelectric conversion unit, an power management unit is designed to tracking the maxi mum power point and applied to achieve effective energy storage conversion. An idle single-mode optical fiber in All-dielectric Self -supporting(ADSS) cable or Optical Ground Wire(OPGW) cable is used as the transmission channel of both the laser energy and t he sensing data. Furthermore, The meteorological sensor monitoring node and data processing instrument are installed on the over head transmission line tower and the substation respectively, the former is to collecting sensor data and the latter is responsible for both power supplying and data analyzing. The simplified commu nication protocol and the POF technique provides an effective sol ution to solve the difficulties in energy power supply and data tra nsmission of transmission line meteorological monitoring and pro motes the application in the field of electric power. In addition, th e system proposed in this paper is used in Wuxi Power Grid whic h has steadily applied the meteorological monitoring of overhead transmission lines until now. A 10.9km OPGW cable is used for p ower supply and data transmission of meteorological monitoring nodes. The meteorological monitoring node uploads data every 6 minutes and has been operating normally for 4 months.
