Theoretical Study on Life Ion Flow via Cell Membrane Under Symmetrical and Unsymmetrical Terahertz Stimulation

Terahertz stimulation causes the information transmission of the cells. It is found that the stimulation can activate voltage-gated ion channels and hydrophilic pores in cell membrane. However, the effect of the hydrophilic pores on the ion flow via voltage-gated ion channels is unclear. This paper theoretically studies the ion flow via the ion channels and the hydrophilic pores under both symmetrical and unsymmetrical terahertz stimulations. Based on the study results, the calcium ion flow via hydrophilic pores causes significant increase in intracellular calcium concentration under the unsymmetrical terahertz stimulation. In contrast, hydrophilic pores have no impact on the voltage-gated ion channel flow under symmetrical terahertz stimulation, since there is no formation of the pores. And the power dissipation of cell metabolic energy in calcium flow via the physiological calcium channels is pretty low at around the level of
$\boldsymbol{10^{-18}}$
W. The results lay the basis for further studies for the applications in future artificial intelligence like terahertz-rate brain-machine communications.
