X-Band High-Gain Wide-Angle Beam Scanning Phased Array-Fed Reflector Antenna

Phased array-fed reflector (PAFR) antennas combine the advantages of high gain and low cost of reflector antenna and the flexibility of phased array antenna beam scanning. A novel X-band PAFR antenna has been designed using seven discrete small parabolic reflectors instead of the parabolic torus, and the array feeder consists of eight resonant series-fed patch arrays. Compared with the traditional design, the proposed novel PAFR antenna has a higher gain, which increases from 27.16dBi to 32.48dBi at
$0^{\circ}$
and from 23.57dBi to 29.48dBi at
$\pm 60^{\circ}$
. And the gain was improved by an average of 5.60dB between
$\pm 60^{\circ}$
without changing the size of reflector and the wide-angle beam scanning. Simulation results confirmed the potential of this antenna for the future wireless systems.
