A Photonic Crystal Loaded Double Sinusoidal Plate Slow Wave Structure for Terahertz TWT

A broadside loaded photonic crystal (PhC) waveguide (BPCW) slow wave structure (SWS) for terahertz traveling wave tube (TWT) has been presented in this paper. The mode competition problem, which is severe in slow wave structures, can be suppressed by the bandgap characteristic of photonic crystals. The calculation results indicate that the proposed BPCW-TWT can produce a saturated output power of over 100 W ranging from 201 GHz to 231 GHz at the operating voltage of 22.7 kV and the operating current of 150 mA. The maximum electron efficiency and saturated output power reach 4% and 137 W at 210 GHz with an input power of 0.15 W, respectively.
