Real-Time Vehicle Tracking and V2V Traffic Information Sharing Using IoT

Road congestions, especially in urban areas, has a large negative social and economic impact on the community as well as on the environment. Existing solutions include road infrastructure expansion and encouraging people to change their mode or schedule of travel. However these solutions are highly expensive and have not garnered the support of travelers as they are considered impractical, respectively. In recent years, a whole array of technological solutions have been proposed. In this context, this paper presents a fully-fledged system that uses internet of things and sensors to provide an overview of traffic conditions. The driver is informed on accidents, traffic jams, police radar locations, and even free parking spaces, via a dedicated screen, sensors and a microcontroller, placed in the vehicle. The system also includes vehicle tracking as well as capture and online storage of vehicle Engine Control Unit (ECU) data.
