Active Suppression of Metal Particles in ACGIL/ GIS by Functionally Graded Spacers

Metal particles seriously threaten the safe and stable operation of GIS/GIL, resulting in insulation failures frequently. This paper proposes a novel method to actively suppress the metal particle contamination by using functionally graded materials ($\varepsilon$-FGM). Based on a 220 kVGIS/GIL model, the electric field distributions as well as the particle trajectories around the spacer are studied by simulation. Results show that the $\varepsilon$-FGM spacer can not only uniform the electric field distribution but also drive away the surrounding metal particles. Compared with the uniform spacer, the maximum electric field around the $\varepsilon$-FGM spacer is reduced by 15.7%, and metal particles no longer move towards the $\varepsilon$-FGM spacer.
