An Offset-Fed T-Shaped Two-Port MIMO Antenna for 38 GHz 5G Millimeter-Wave band Applications

This paper represents an offset-fed T-shaped microstrip patch antenna for radiation of electromagnetic energy in a 38 GHz mm-wave band for fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication technology. Roger RT/5880 of size 12× 10mm with height h=0.254 mm is used having relative permittivity and loss tangent of 2.2 and 0.0009 respectively. The design comprises two conventional rectangular patches combined to form a T-like structure with offset feed for the 38 GHz band. The dimensions of rectangles are optimized to provide resonance at 38 GHz and can be useful in mobile infrastructure. The antenna provides an impedance bandwidth of 2.2 GHz with 8.04 dBi gain for the targeted band. The proposed antenna radiating EM wave is also analyzed for a 2-port MIMO configuration and provides microwave access. The elements are placed adjacent to each other without any decoupling structure. MIMO provides an isolation of more than 22dB in the frequency range of 37.1GHz to 39.3 GHz. It is also analyzed for diversity parameters with Envelope Correlation Coefficient at 38 GHz (ECC38) is less than 0.02, Diversity Gain(DG38) >9.999dB, Total Active Reflection Coefficient(TARC38) < zero dB, and Channel Capacity Loss(CCL38) of less than 0. 4b/s/Hz.
