Mathematical Modeling & MATLAB Simulation of STATCOM Based Profile Controller for Self Excited Induction Generator

A three Phase Induction Machine can generate electrical power if the motor is rotated using mechanical power above its synchronous speed and the core of the motor having residual magnetism. The motor running in this mode is known as Self Exited Induction Generator or SEIG. SEIG inherits number of vulnerabilities and limitations such as poor power quality, poor efficiency and low power factor because of the construction of the motor, operational principal and variable speed of the prime mover. Poor Power factor and variable speed of prime mover, will produces more heating losses in rotor and will result in low system efficiency & sometime system may collapse. But in the present scenario of the tissile fuel crises, SEIG had attracted numbers of research scholars for its simplicity, robust nature and less setup cost. The presented paper investigates about the latest research in the field of SEIG to address the limitations and vulnerabilities along with the technique to improve power quality in SEIG. STATCOM stands for Static Compensator is basically an auxiliary circuit used to improve profile of SEIG. STATCOM is used as profile regulator. Mathematical model of SEIG is created along with STATCOM. MATLAB Simulation of derived mathematical model is presented in the article to test the performance of the suggested system. An effort had been put to make SEIG more efficient.
