A Modified PID Control for Higher Order References and Disturbances

Many industrial processes are most frequently represented by the first order plus dead time model and a PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) control is one of the most often utilized for such processes. A solid control law design is a key factor to take into account for the efficient and effective operation of any process. In this study, a modified PID control law has been presented in order to provide a satisfactory performance for both step- and ramp-types of references and disturbances. The pole-placement approach is used to derive the controller parameters. Simulation studies are included for both nominal and perturbed cases. Finally, a performance comparison of recently developed strategies with ISE (Integral of Square Error), ITAE (Integral of Time Absolute Error), and IAE (Integral of Absolute Error) is also given.
