Automation in R&D: complying with contradictory constraints of seemingly incompatible world

In this paper, a novel approach for automation in an R&D fab environment is proposed. Deploying automation into the shop floor of an R&D center raises specific challenges, when compared to a production fab automation. These specific challenges will be detailed and compared with classical ones from production fabs. An innovative approach for automation will then be proposed, and its deployment into the shop floor will be presented. Finally, the outcomes and drawbacks of this deployment will be presented and discussed.
