Influence Analysis of Aerodynamic Damping on Transmission Line System’s Wind-Induced Vibration

Transmission lines are typical wind sensitive systems. Transmission tower failures often bring huge economic losses. Studies on the characteristics of random wind field and wind-induced responses of transmission tower-line coupling system can provide important reference for improving the safety of transmission lines. This paper carried out wind-induced vibration analysis based on a 500 kV transmission line. Multiple random wind field between 10 m/s and 30 m/s are considered. The wind-induced vibrations of the conductors and the shield wires are calculated in different conditions based on whether aerodynamic damping or the influence of transmission tower is considered. The calculation results show that the aerodynamic damping can significantly reduce the conductors and the shield wires’ downwind amplitude. When the influence of transmission towers is taken into account, the amplitude of some conductors’ vibrations in the aerodynamic damping case is larger than that in the non-aerodynamic damping case. Besides, the shield wires’ high frequency vibration can be more significant in the aerodynamic damping case.
