A novel Compact RHCP Antenna with wide 3 dB AR bandwidth for S-band IRNSS application

The compact Right Hand Circularly Polarized (RHCP) Microstrip Patch Antennas (MPA) over the novel Reactive Impedance Surface (RIS) based metasubstrate has been designed and analyzed exclusively for the S-band navigational satellite system application. The RHCP radiation is achieved for single S-band frequency (2.492 GHz) by placing uniquely corner truncated square patch over the novel design structure of RIS substrate. The proposed low-cost compact antenna prototype achieves 10 dB return loss bandwidths (RLBW) of 14.05% and 3 dB Axial Ratio Bandwidth (ARBW) of 4.01% at S band frequency. The cross-polar discrimination (XPD) of 16.85 dB along with wide 3 dB axial ratio beamwidth of 135° at targeted frequency band indicate highly effective RHCP operation. It is the most compact antenna ever reported in S-band with overall electric size of 0.28λ
