Current Advancements in Biomimetic Electrospun Fibers as Potential Treatments to Meniscal Injuries

The treatment of meniscus injuries remains an open topic for experts due to its complex biomechanical design. Through the years, patients have undergone non-operative management, meniscal repair, meniscus allograft transplant, and synthetic implant to treat their damaged meniscus tissues. However, modern medicine introduces a new approach to tissue engineering that utilizes the method of electrospinning. This technique allows the extracellular matrix (ECM) of the meniscus to be mimicked through scaffolds that can have mechanical and chemical properties that are compatible with the meniscus. In this paper, the feasibility and challenges encountered in electrospun fibers for the treatment of the meniscus were discussed, wherein it was found that there are limitations to the proposed cure: surgical interventions, lack of isolated cells, especially for larger areas of the meniscus, and the like.
