A pattern reconfigurable antenna with metasurface based on UAV platform

In this letter, a pattern reconfigurable antenna based on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) platform is proposed. Firstly, a knife-shaped omnidirectional planar printed antenna is designed. The antenna bandwidth is 1.35~1.98 GHz, and the relative bandwidth is 37.8%. Secondly, an elliptical cylinder metasurface radome is designed by the L-band metasurface units. By switching the on-state and off-state of pin-diodes on the units, the radome can realize the transformation of wave transmission and shielding. So that the radiation pattern changes from omnidirectional to directional. The maximum gain of the omnidirectional antenna is 3.78 dBi at 1.9 GHz, and the directional gain is 8.94 dBi.
