Elliptical Square Lattice Photonic Crystal Fiber for 5G Communication

A new square lattice solid elliptical core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with circular cladding for terahertz (THz) communication is designed. Guiding characteristics like birefringence, power fraction, effective material loss (EML), effective area, V-number are analyzed using COMSOL Multiphysics finite element-based software for the frequency range of 0.2-2 THz. Topas is used as the fiber material owing to its excellent characteristics in the THz range. The numerically obtained results ensure that the proposed PCF exhibits lowest effective area of 0.108 μm2, low EML of 0.2-0.3 μm

, and high core power fraction of 99.67% at 2 THz. The simulation results suggests that this type of PCF can be very useful in 5G data transmission.
