A Mathematical Structural Modulation Method for Neutral-Point Potential Balancing of Three-Level Neutral-Point-Clamped Converters

To achieve the fast neutral-point (NP) potential balance of three-level NP -clamped (3L-NPC) converters, a mathematical structural modulation method is presented in this article, featuring fast balance capability, low computation, and easy implementation. In this method, the duty cycle is decomposed into the differential-mode component (DMC) and the common-mode component (CMC). The CMC is used to synthesize the ac output voltage while the DMC is adopted to control the NP potential. Based on the fractional-order sliding-mode control theory, the DMC is constructed. As a result, NP potential balancing in a pre-calculated time is achieved. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by experimental results.
