Shape Monitoring of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer by Embedded Fiber Bragg Grating Array

A shape monitoring system based on optical fiber sensing technique is demonstrated. Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor with high temperature resistance and high strength is embedded in Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CRFP) and they are molded together under the condition of 130 ℃ and 6 bar. The strain quasi-distribution from FBG arrays is transferred to curvature distribution, and the shape of CRFP plate is calculated via strain-curvature-displacement algorithm successfully. This technique is promising in structure health monitoring of airframe or smart skin in the future.
