Experimental Approach of SIW-based Filter Development Using Artificial Dielectric Material

This paper presents an approach of SIW-based filter development using artificial dielectric material (ADM). The filter uses a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technique which is constructed by two rows of conductor vias which connect the SIW surface and the groundplane. Whilst the ADM is composed of conductor wires in row which is inserted into the dielectric substrate. Different to the structure of SIW, conductor wires for the ADM are unconnected either to the SIW surface or the groundplane, so that the conductor wires are only embedded in the dielectric substrate. The material used for the dielectric substrate is an FR4 Epoxy with the relative permittivity of 4.4. The total dimension of the SIW-based filter is 66 mm × 40 mm with the total thickness of 3.2 mm. The measured results show that the ADM can lower the operating frequency of SIW-based filter from the frequencies of 2.29 GHz and 2.83 GHz to be 1.96 GHz and 2.89 GHz, respectively.
