Mitigation of PV Penetration Effects with Electric Spring

In this modern era of civilization, renewable energy sources and isolated systems are at top priority, may it be solar, wind, or electric vehicles. Though from the point of efficiency isolated systems have proved to be efficient. But it poses a severe drawback of power control management. This paper mainly focuses on mitigating the disturbance created during partial shading of PV. The effect of partial shading behavior is observed in an isolated system. The isolated system is a hybrid microgrid, consisting of a SEIG-PV generation system interfaced with a nine-switch converter (NSC). The operation of NSC provides a better option as it operates both as a series and shunt converter. The series converter connected with a non-critical load forms an electric spring or smart load. The PV is connected to the dc-link of NSC and the power flow of the PV is taken care of by the shunt-acted converter which is connected to the SEIG terminal. Two different control structures have been designed for combined power control for both series and shunt converters. The main focus of this work is to observe the system performance when there is partial shading on the PV side. The entire system is subjected to partial shading of PV causing variable power injection from the PV unit. The entire system is modeled and simulated using Matrix Laboratory and verified using OPAL-RT 4510 platform.
