Real Time Hardware in Loop (HIL) Implementation and Control of Wind Generator

In Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG), it is essential to maintain stator voltage and frequency at suitable value at every possible speed of rotor. Maintaining stator voltage and frequency is of utmost importance when DFIG operates in stand-alone mode to attain desired quality of power. It is also an essential condition in grid-connected mode for ensuring desired power flow. The primary route for controlling DFIG voltage and frequency at varying speed is through the Rotor Side Inverter (RSI). The present contribution reports modeling of RSI to control DFIG in real- time hardware-in-loop through MATLAB, Opal RT and associated hardware. Control parameters of the RSI are modulation index, rotor frequency, and switching frequency of the rotor of DFIG. Results at different wind speeds are observed both at open circuit and load connected condition. It is observed that at different wind speeds, judicious control of modulation index and rotor frequency enables maintaining 415V, 50 Hz at stator output terminals.
