Challenges Associated with Standardization of NILM Methodology

The massive technological development has led us to an ever-increasing dependency on electricity in recent times. This reliance leads us to prepare a comprehensive electricity consumption plan. However, consumers find it challenging to optimize energy usage due to the lack of suitable tools and technologies and heavy dependence on traditional practice patterns. They can greatly benefit from monitoring the load, which could be done intrusively and non-intrusively. Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) is receiving more attention due to its low cost and easy installation. The research community has proposed several methodologies for load monitoring, but there are many challenges associated with its standardization. This review paper discusses the challenges of non-intrusive load monitoring for residential and industrial consumers. It also discusses the methodologies proposed by various authors to address those challenges. This paper provides a direction for future research such that a standardized method for non-intrusive load monitoring could be achieved.
