Comparation between PI and Model Predictive Control of Two Mass Resonant Mechanical System

One of the trends in modern industry nowadays is certainly the continuous improvement of the final product quality. Speed controlled electrical drives used in industry today should often provide reference speed within complex systems. Therefore, there is a constant need to improve speed control by applying advanced control algorithms. Accordingly, the paper presents comparative analysis of two concepts of speed control implemented in two mass resonant mechanical system, PI controller and Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm. PI control algorithm represent standard industrial controller widely used and easily maintained. Model Predictive Control algorithm is recognized as ideal solution for control of two mass system due to its reliability related to complex systems control, only in the case of known exact values of mechanical parameters. Comparative analysis of two types of control algorithms is performed based on its implementation within mathematical model of two mass system developed in MATLAB/Simulink and presented in the paper.
