Peak Passive Ripple Mode Control for Boost Converter with Fast Transient Response

The boost converter has been widely used in portable devices. Generally, peak current mode (PCM) control is often used in boost converters to improve stability and bandwidth because of the single pole feature. However, the slope of the inductor current causes a large undershoot during load-transient. This paper proposes a peak passive ripple mode (PPRM) control to improve the load-transient performance. Furthermore, PPRM control has a lower quiescent current feature than PCM control because the current sensor is not required, and the passive ripple circuit consumes a lower quiescent current. A small signal model is proposed for PPRM control operated in continuous conduction mode (CCM) and the proposed small signal model is verified by experiment and simulation results.
