The Geographic Smoothing Potential of Solar Irradiation in Java, Madura, and Bali Electric Power System

Indonesia is making ambitious efforts to increase the usage of renewable energy sources to meet the country's energy needs. However, there were still concerns about how the intermittent nature of solar power output might affect the grid. This study focused on the problem of intermittent solar power and examined the potential role that distributed geographic location could play in lowering the overall intermittency. 18 solar irradiation stations scattered throughout the Java, Madura, and Bali (Jamali) electric power systems were used as the irradiation data source. The total irradiation of all locations was then evaluated for its intermittency using Power Spectral Density (PSD), Welch Method. According to this study, connecting 18 stations reduces intermittency by 70 to 93 percent, depending on the timestep. The study also demonstrates that after 10 locations, the reduction becomes almost insignificant.
