Obstacle Height Estimation through Vehicular Radar Interferometry

Considering the issue that traditional vehicular millimeter-wave radar (MMWR) system is incapable of providing height information of pavement, a method based on angular measurement using interferometry technique is proposed to the height estimation of obstacle existing in road and the reduction of phase errors introduced by random fluctuations of ground radar cross section (RCS) in addition. The estimation of direction of arrival (DOA) is implemented via the utilization of delayed phase corresponding to each receiving channel and further recover on the height of road. The height of obstacle is estimated to be height difference between obstacle segment and surrounding ground segment. The verification of feasibility and validity of the method is conducted in the ultimate part. It is indicated by processing results of raw data and analyses that the method proposed has applicability to the height estimation of obstacle in a realistic environment.
