Spectrum Efficient Faster-than-Nyquist DCO-FBMC for Optical Wireless Communications

Direct current-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) has shown advantages in optical wireless communications (OWC). As an alternative to OFDM, filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) achieves higher spectral efficiency via eliminating cyclic prefix (CP). A faster than Nyquist (FTN) based DCO-FBMC scheme is proposed to further improve the spectrum efficiency of OWC. Monte Carlo simulation shows that the proposed FTN-DCO-FBMC system has better bit error rate (BER) performance and higher spectrum efficiency than DCO-OFDM at the cost of computational complexity.
