A New Monitoring and Control Method for Improving Voltage Stability Margin

A novel method for assessing and managing the voltage stability of the power systems is proposed in this paper. In the proposed method, a predictor-corrector continuation power flow technique is used to trace the active power versus voltage curves (PV curves). As a result, the voltage profiles under various system conditions can be analyzed until maximum loading is reached. Furthermore, the optimality of voltage regulations is achieved by managing the voltage control devices (on-load tap changers, shunt capacitors, and reactors). The mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) approach, which considers the operations constraint, is used to formulate the optimization problem and minimize the control operations. The novelty of the proposed method lies in considering the infeasibility of the control problem, where there is no feasible region and voltages can no longer be controlled within the upper and lower limits. In these cases, the method acts effectively in minimizing the overall voltage violations.
