A Concurrent Dual-band Continuous Mode Doherty Power Amplifier with Improved Bandwidth and Linearity for 5G Base-Stations

This paper presents a concurrent Dual-band Doherty Power Amplifier based on Continuous-Mode Technology, which can improve Doherty Power Amplifiers’ (DPAs’) bandwidth and efficiency by manipulating harmonic components to reshape current and voltage waveforms over a continuous bandwidth. Such operation creates a series of continuous high efficiency modes at each frequency over the band. Follow the above technology, a 45-Watts dual-band 3.5-4.9 GHz C-DPA is designed and fabricated. the dual-band C-DPA exhibits drain efficiency higher than 60% at saturation power and 40% at a −8.5 dB Power Backoff (PBO). In addition, using a frequency 3.45 GHz+4.9 GHz BW 100MHz + 100MHz modulated signal and the 2D-DPD, the fabricated dual-band C-DPA is measured and linearized. According to the measured results, the designed dual-band C-DPA exhibits 40.4% modulated efficiency at an average output power 5.45w while maintaining Adjacent Channel Power Ratio (ACPR) below - 45dBc.
