Multi-dimensional Channel Characteristics Analysis for Avionics Compartment

To meet avionics’ demand on Giga bit data rate and safety in the short range communication, wireless avionics intra-communications (WAICs) which work at 60 GHz have attracted great attention. However, the penetration of radio waves at the 60 GHz band is weak, while the structure of the avionics compartment is complex. Therefore, it will cause complex radio propagation characteristics for the avionics compartment. In this paper, an extensive ray-tracing (RT) simulation in a typical avionics compartment at the 60 GHz band is conducted. The avionics compartment is divided into line-of-sight (LOS) region and non-LOS (NLOS) region based on the propagation mechanism. Channels properties research for the avionics compartment involve delay, power and space domains. For the delay domain, root-mean-square delay spread (RMS DS) is extracted. For the power domain, power ratio (PR) is characterized. For the space domain, azimuth / elevation angular spread of arrival / departure (ASA, ASD, ESA, ESD) is obtained. Moreover, the paper also studies cross-correlation of aforementioned channel characteristics. Our research outcomes will provide valuable insights into the system design and evaluation for the WAICs.
