A Low-Profile Microstrip Patch Antenna with Enhanced Bandwidth and Reduced Size

In this paper, a low-profile microstrip patch antenna (MPA) with enhanced bandwidth is proposed. Firstly, the case of loading short-circuit pins is studied to improve the bandwidth of the MPA. The simulation results show that multiple resonant frequency points can be obtained to expand the bandwidth by properly selecting the number, diameter, and spacing of the short-circuit pins. At the same time, the antenna can be guaranteed to the attractive peak gain by reducing the insertion loss. Additionally, the step-type side-feed method with branch loading is adopted to achieve good impedance matching. Finally, the proposed antenna is simulated and verified. The results show that the proposed MPA has a wide impedance bandwidth of about 45.2%. Meanwhile, the maximum gain of the antenna has remained of above 6.5dBi in the working frequency band. Meanwhile, it holds the low-profile property of about 0.051 free-space wavelengths.
