Phase-sensitive Optical Time-domain Reflectometers (Φ-OTDRs) are widely used as distributed acoustic, vibration and temperature sensors [1], [2]. Φ -OTDRs for vibro-acoustic sensing require laser sources with low white frequency noise [4].Φ -OTDRs become increasingly important for geophysics research where operation at lower frequencies (< 10 Hz) is important [3]. This paper studies Φ -OTDRs phase noise at low frequency caused by linear frequency drift affects.

Abstract:
We present numerical simulations of the Dual-pulse Phase-sensitive Optical Time-domain Reflectometer which response is affected by the laser optical frequency drift. The phase signals retrieved from fixed fiber positions (channels) demonstrate random jumps. Corresponding phase noise spectra approximated by a combination of white noise determined by the laser linewidth and flicker phase noise determined by the laser optical frequency drift rate.
