I. Introduction
In Evolutionary Hardware (EH), Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) are applied to hardware circuit design. These algorithms implement the idea of Natural Selection, where individuals that are most suitable to their environment are more likely to leave copies of themselves in the following generations. Gordon and Bently [1] state that using EAs for circuit design allows for “design automation and innovation for an increasing range of applications”. Circuit designs have successfully been evolved at various levels of abstraction including netlists [2], [3], finite-state machines [4], and behavioural modeling using Hardware Description Languages (HDLs) [5], [6].
