Introduction
To support mobile broadband applications and machine-type communications, next-generation cellular systems are expected to witness an explosive growth in both transmission rate and traffic volume, which will worsen spectrum scarcity further. To tackle this issue, increasing utilization efficiency of available spectrum resources will be critical [1]. The Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has called for proposals to develop device-to-device (D2D) communications in Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) systems. D2D communication allows two proximity D2D-capable user equipments (UEs) to perform direct data transmissions with each other under the assistance of evolved Node B (eNB) [2]. Not only can it improve the entire system spectral efficiency via flexible reuse of radio resources, but also ease the core network data processing loads by performing traffic offloading [3], [4]. Hence, the overall system performance and capacity can be improved significantly.
