I. Introduction
With the recent developments in video capture and display technologies, 3-D video communication and entertainment is one of the most promising services in video applications. They can bring new user experiences to a set of applications, such as mobile 3-D TV, free-viewpoint video, and immersive teleconferencing [1], [2]. Along with these applications, the huge amount of data needed to be processed becomes a burden for both storage and transmission. Inspired by suppression theory [3], [4], mixed-resolution approach, in which low-resolution and full-resolution images are jointly used, has been applied to reduce the amount of data to be compressed.
