I. Introduction
Energy optimization is the global trend today and improvement in efficiency of electrical equipment is a significant step toward the target. The energy scenario, thus, demands a rational and efficient utilization of electricity. Studies made in different application sectors to identify the loads which promise a substantial electrical energy saving reveal that electric motor can be considered as one of the most potential load for energy saving. The findings are that
three-phase induction motors account for approximately 60% of the total electricity usage in different applications,
85–90% of three-phase induction motors belong to the squirrel cage category, and
the cost of energy consumed in a motor in its entire service period is, on an average, worth sixty to one hundred times its initial cost [1].
