1. Introduction
Coherent Doppler LiDAR (CDL) is a commonly used velocimeter in aerospace applications for wind speed measurements, with research currently being done in improving its range and resolution [1]. As the range resolution in CDL is primarily influenced by the pulse width used, the Acousto-Optic Modulator (AOM) that is commonly found in current implementations has become a limiting factor, due primarily to the rise-time and intermediate frequency restrictions it imposes. Thus, to overcome these restrictions, in this paper we present to the best of the authors knowledge the first implementation of CDL using an optical Single Sideband Modulator (SSBM) and demonstrate its potential for shorter pulses and better Doppler shift estimation.
