Abstract:
The global impact of the Covid-19 outbreak has threatened the social and economic fabric of the communities, and altered the nature of lives. Today, as the major health risks of COVID-19 seem to be receding, it is crucial to pause, ponder and plan to progress after the crisis to be better prepared for the future. In view of the rising of physical retail transactions, it is noticed that the physical shopping crowd has returned since people loathed the feeling of being cooped up in the house during movement control orders. As such, a contactless intelligent shopping cart could be an ideal invention. This paper aims to design and develop an intelligent shopping cart with an automatic following function, which is capable of trailing shoppers while avoiding obstacles along the way with its built-in obstacle detection function. The proposed design embeds renewable energy technology into the cart by using solar-charged batteries to power up the sensors and controllers on the cart. The results show that the successful prototype fulfils the objectives of extending convenience to people from the perspective of social, environmental and health for the sustainable development of tomorrow.
