1. Introduction
Wheeled mobile robots have proven to be very valuable for space exploration since they increase the action radius of a lander without the cost and risk of a human mission. The French Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) jointly develop a 20kg rover for the Martian Moon eXploration (MMX) Mission of the Japanese Space Agency (JAXA). The launch is scheduled for 2024 and the rover will be deployed on Phobos in the first half of 2027.
